For most of Bitcoin’s existence, “Bitcoin ecosystem” was an oxymoron β Bitcoin was Bitcoin, and there were no apps built on it. That changed in early 2023 with the Ordinals upgrade, which enabled inscriptions of arbitrary data onto individual satoshis, and then accelerated through 2024 with Runes, Bitcoin L2 protocols like Stacks and Babylon, and a wave of Bitcoin-native DeFi experiments.
The sector is still small compared to the Ethereum or Solana ecosystems, but the directional trend is clear β more is being built on top of Bitcoin now than at any point in its history.
