Ethereum Classic Price Today
ETCEthereum Classic (ETC)
Ethereum Classic is the original Ethereum blockchain that continued after the 2016 DAO hack hard fork. It upholds the principle “code is law” and maintains immutability.
In 2016, a vulnerability in The DAO smart contract led to the theft of millions of dollars in ETH. The Ethereum community voted to hard fork and reverse the theft, creating the chain we know today as Ethereum. A minority refused to alter the blockchain and continued the original chain as Ethereum Classic. For them, immutability-the idea that the blockchain should never be changed, even to fix mistakes-was paramount.
Ethereum Classic remains on Proof of Work (Ethereum moved to Proof of Stake in 2022) and is secured by miners. It runs the same EVM as Ethereum, so it supports smart contracts and dapps. The ecosystem is smaller than Ethereum’s but includes DeFi protocols, NFTs, and projects that value the “code is law” philosophy. ETC has also been proposed as a merge-mined asset with Ethereum Classic serving as a backup or alternative chain.
