BNB (BNB)

What is BNB?

BNB is the native asset of BNB Chain (formerly Binance Smart Chain / BSC)—a smart-contract network that stays compatible with Ethereum’s tooling (Solidity, MetaMask-style wallets, the same address format) while targeting lower fees and high throughput. You pay gas in BNB to send transactions, deploy contracts, and interact with DeFi apps on the chain.

The network uses Proof of Staked Authority: a small, rotating set of validators produces blocks, with staking and delegation aligning economic security with token holders. That design trades some decentralization assumptions for speed and predictable costs—similar in spirit to other high-TPS EVM chains, and familiar to users moving between Ethereum L1 and L2s.

BNB’s role does not stop at gas. Historically it also tied to Binance’s centralized exchange—fee discounts, launchpad participation, and other utilities—so demand for BNB often tracks both on-chain activity and CeFi product usage. A portion of supply has been burned over time via protocol mechanisms tied to network usage and scheduled burns, which affects circulating supply in ways holders watch closely.

BNB launched in 2017 as an ERC-20 token before migrating to BNB Chain’s own ledger. Today it underpins a large DeFi and gaming ecosystem, side-by-side with opBNB and other scaling efforts in the same family. As with any exchange-linked token, regulation and corporate strategy can move narratives; verify official docs for the latest on staking, burns, and chain upgrades.
