What is Arbitrum?

Arbitrum is an Ethereum layer-2 built by Offchain Labs that scales apps by moving execution off Ethereum L1 while still anchoring security to Ethereum’s consensus. The flagship chain Arbitrum One is an optimistic rollup: transactions run in the L2 environment, state roots post to Ethereum, and fraud proofs (where applicable in the design) secure honest progression—understand the rollup’s upgrade path via official docs rather than Twitter summaries.

For users, the headline benefit is familiar: EVM compatibility (Solidity, existing wallets) with lower fees and faster inclusion than congested mainnet—hence deep DeFi liquidity in venues like Uniswap, Aave, and GMX. Arbitrum Nova targets high-frequency / gaming workloads with different data-availability trade-offs versus One.

ARB is a governance token for the Arbitrum DAO, influencing protocol upgrades, treasury use, and ecosystem grants—not a mandatory gas token on the L2 itself (fees are paid in ETH on typical EVM paths). DAO politics and delegate voting can move markets around catalysts; bridge hacks and contract bugs remain separate risks from “being an L2.”
